MODELS AND MATERIALITIES: CONFABULATION AND THE CONTEMPORARY STILL LIFE.
CONVERSATION EVENT WITH FRANCES WOODLEY, PHILIP NICOL & OTHERS INVOLVED IN THE EXHIBITION
This event brings to a conclusion a curatorial project that has lasted four years, presented three exhibitions with accompanying catalogues and included 22 artists and nine writers. Models and Materialities: Confabulation and the Contemporary Still Life aims to draw attention to the dynamic and imaginative approaches that are currently to be seen in the painting of still life—but not quite as we might imagine. The tradition is still evident, but only just. Instead of the usual motifs, the paintings in this exhibition push boundaries and escape the straightjacket of convention. Here are paintings of things that painters have made themselves or things that have been generated through the process of painting itself. It is confabulation, unreliable memory of a tradition put into play.
Come along to a walk and talk’ of the exhibition, followed by refreshments, before a discussion of issues arising out of the catalogue.
