The next exhibition showing at BayArt:
Philip Whiting
15.08.08 - 20.09.08

This new season for BayArt brings a wide and varied range of art to Cardiff that can be enjoyed and appreciated by all. The gallery's avowed aim is to champion the best and most interesting examples of contemporary painting, drawing and sculpture. Two exhibitions showcase the work of painters of different generations who all share a belief in the ability of painting to encompass and engage with the variability of human experience. All of them are immersed in the challenges and the pleasures of painting, its long history, its boundaries and conventions, its rigours and its possibilities. All attend to the specifics of the medium and to the fact of painting, both in the manipulation of the paint and through the act of looking, imagining and comprehending.

The gallery is always keen to promote the importance and primacy of drawing within the visual arts, and is both pleased and excited to be, once again, hosting this years Jerwood Drawing Prize. This is a significant exhibition open to artists from all over Britain and demonstrates the vitality and variability of contemporary drawing. This will be shortly followed by the exhibition Drawing Rooms which brings together the work of four artists to whom drawing is a crucial discipline.

Finally BayArt is excited to be hosting The Jerwood Sculpture prize. Now in its fourth year, the prize has built a strong reputation for quality and innovation. Eight sculptors have been selected to make maquettes of their proposals which will all be on show at BayArt in January. The winning sculpture will be unveiled at The Jerwood Sculpture Park, in the grounds of Ragley, Warwickshire in 2008.
